Goitre
Surgery for a goitre that's gotten in the way: pressing on the windpipe, making swallowing difficult, or simply visible enough to be uncomfortable. We remove only what needs removing.

What is goitre?
A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland. It can be diffuse (uniform enlargement) or multinodular (many nodules together). Some goitres function normally, others cause hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or pressure on the windpipe and oesophagus.
Surgery is needed when the goitre causes pressure symptoms (breathing difficulty, swallowing problems), looks unsightly, contains a suspicious nodule, or simply doesn't respond to medication.
Who this is for
- Visible swelling at the front of the neck
- Pressure when lying flat or swallowing
- Voice changes or chronic cough
- Choking sensation, especially at night
How it's done
Evaluation
Blood tests for thyroid function, ultrasound to map the gland, and sometimes a CT scan if the goitre extends behind the breastbone (retrosternal).
Surgery (when indicated)
Either partial (one lobe) or total thyroidectomy depending on the cause. Done through a small incision in the neck crease, which heals to a fine line.
Recovery & aftercare
Hospital stay
Usually overnight, sometimes 2 nights for larger goitres. Most patients are home within 48 hours.
Voice and calcium
Voice is checked carefully before and after surgery; calcium levels are monitored for the first few days. Both are protected by careful technique that preserves the relevant nerves and parathyroid glands.
Questions worth asking
If the whole gland is removed, yes — a single daily tablet replaces the thyroid hormone. If only part is removed, often no medication is needed.

Most thyroid nodules are harmless. The job is to figure out which ones aren't, and that takes ultrasound first, fine-needle aspiration if the scan suggests it. The plan after that depends entirely on what we find.
