Overview

What is problems in lactating breasts?

Breastfeeding is meant to be natural, but for many women it's also the source of a lot of problems — engorgement, blocked ducts, painful feeds, mastitis, low supply, latching difficulties. Most of these are common, treatable, and shouldn't mean stopping breastfeeding before you're ready.

Help works best early. The longer issues go on, the more they affect feeding, sleep, and confidence — and the more likely they are to escalate into infection.

When to consider it

Who this is for

  • Painful feeds beyond the first week or two
  • A hard, tender lump that won't go down with feeding or warm compresses
  • Fever, redness, or feeling unwell along with breast pain
  • Cracked, bleeding, or persistently sore nipples
  • Concerns about milk supply or baby's weight gain
The procedure

How it's done

01

Engorgement and blocked ducts

Frequent feeding, warm compresses before feeds and cold compresses after, gentle massage in the direction of the nipple, and improving latch usually clear blocked ducts within 24 to 48 hours.

02

Painful feeds and nipple problems

Most painful feeding comes from latch problems. We work through positioning, latch technique, and (if needed) treatment for cracks or thrush.

03

When infection sets in

If the area becomes red, warm, and you feel unwell, antibiotics are needed. Continue feeding from the affected breast — it helps.

Common questions

Questions worth asking

Most issues, treated early, don't affect supply. Even mastitis, treated properly, doesn't usually need you to stop.

If you're feverish, the area is red and getting bigger, or symptoms aren't improving in 24 hours, see someone. Quicker treatment, easier recovery.
