Overview

What is oncoplastic breast surgery?

Oncoplastic surgery combines the cancer operation with the techniques of plastic surgery, so removing the tumour and reshaping the breast happen in the same procedure. The cancer is treated as carefully as ever; the breast is closed in a way that preserves shape, symmetry, and confidence.

It's particularly useful when the lump is in a location where simple removal would leave a dent, or when the breast is large enough that a reduction technique can be combined with the cancer surgery for better symmetry on both sides.

When to consider it

Who this is for

  • Breast cancer where simple lumpectomy would leave a noticeable cosmetic defect
  • Larger breasts, where reduction technique can be combined with cancer surgery
  • A preference for the best possible cosmetic result alongside cancer treatment
The procedure

How it's done

01

Pre-op planning

We mark the incisions and the planned tissue rearrangement before surgery, often in front of a mirror so you can see what's planned. Sometimes the other breast is reduced or lifted in the same operation for symmetry.

02

The operation

The cancer is removed along with safe margins. The remaining breast tissue is then rearranged to fill the defect, preserving the natural contour.

After the procedure

Recovery & aftercare

First two weeks

Recovery is similar to lumpectomy, with slightly more swelling because of the tissue rearrangement. Most patients are back to normal routine in 1 to 2 weeks.

Common questions

Questions worth asking

Yes. Oncoplastic technique doesn't compromise on margins or lymph node assessment — it adds to the closure, not the cancer surgery.

When done as part of cancer treatment, most insurance covers it. We help with the documentation.
