Robotic Breast Surgery

Robotic breast surgery uses tiny incisions and magnified vision to do work that used to need a much larger opening. The cosmetic difference is real; the recovery is shorter; the cancer outcomes are equivalent in well-selected cases.

Overview

What is robotic breast surgery?

Robotic breast surgery uses the da Vinci surgical platform to perform breast cancer operations through smaller, more discreetly-placed incisions than traditional open surgery would allow. The surgeon operates from a console with magnified, three-dimensional vision and instruments that translate hand movements into smaller, steadier ones.

It's particularly relevant for nipple-sparing mastectomy, where the entire breast tissue is removed but the nipple, areola, and skin envelope are preserved — making subsequent reconstruction look more natural. Performed at CK Birla Hospital, Jaipur.

When to consider it

Who this is for

  • Selected early-stage breast cancers suitable for nipple-sparing mastectomy
  • Patients prioritising the cosmetic result alongside cancer treatment
  • Those who'd benefit from the smaller incision and faster recovery
  • A clear understanding of what robotic surgery can and can't offer
The procedure

How it's done

01

Pre-operative planning

Imaging (MRI may be added to standard mammography and ultrasound), pathology review, and a detailed conversation about the approach and what reconstruction will follow.

02

The procedure

Performed at CK Birla. Small incisions in cosmetically discreet locations (under the arm, around the areola); the breast tissue is removed using robotic instruments while the skin envelope and nipple are preserved.

03

Reconstruction

Often done in the same operation, either with an implant or the patient's own tissue, depending on what's right for the case.

After the procedure

Recovery & aftercare

Hospital stay

Usually 24 to 48 hours. Pain is significantly less than after traditional mastectomy.

Returning to normal

Light activities within a week, full activities by 4 weeks. The cosmetic result settles over 3 to 6 months.

Common questions

Questions worth asking

For carefully selected cases, yes. The oncological principles aren't compromised — the same amount of breast tissue is removed; only the access route is different.

CK Birla supports insurance for robotic procedures. We'll help with the documentation and pre-authorisation.
