Overview

What is robotic thyroid surgery?

Robotic thyroid surgery hides the incision under the arm or behind the ear, leaving the front of the neck completely untouched. The robotic platform — operated by the surgeon from a console — provides magnified vision and precise instrument control through a small space.

It's particularly suited to younger patients, those for whom a visible neck scar would be culturally or professionally significant, and those with smaller thyroid problems where the approach is technically feasible.

When to consider it

Who this is for

  • Patients who want to avoid a visible neck scar
  • Smaller thyroid lobectomies and selected total thyroidectomies
  • Otherwise healthy patients without prior neck surgery
  • A preference for the cosmetic result that traditional approaches can't match
The procedure

How it's done

01

Pre-operative planning

We assess the size and type of thyroid problem, the patient's anatomy, and whether the robotic approach is technically suitable. Not every case is.

02

The procedure

Done at CK Birla Hospital. The incision is made under the arm; instruments are introduced through it; the surgery is then performed using the robotic console. Total time is longer than open surgery but recovery is faster.

After the procedure

Recovery & aftercare

Hospital stay

Usually 24 to 48 hours. The neck has no incision; the underarm incision is hidden in a natural crease.

Returning to normal

Light activities within 3 to 5 days, full activities by 10 to 14 days. The cosmetic result becomes evident over a few weeks.

Common questions

Questions worth asking

Yes — for selected cases, robotic thyroidectomy gives equivalent oncological outcomes to open surgery. The selection is the key part.

Because not every case is suited. Larger glands, locally advanced cancers, and certain anatomical factors mean open surgery remains the better option. We choose the approach honestly.
