Overview

What is breast lump evaluation?

A new lump in the breast is one of the most common reasons women come to see me. The good news: the majority turn out to be benign — fibroadenomas, cysts, fibrocystic changes — none of which is cancer. The job is to figure that out properly, not to reassure on guesswork.

Evaluation starts with a clinical examination, then imaging (ultrasound for younger women, mammogram for those over 40 or with denser breasts), then a needle biopsy if the imaging looks unusual. Most patients leave the first visit with either a clear answer or a clear plan.

When to consider it

Who this is for

  • Any new lump that wasn't there before, even a small one
  • A lump that has changed in size, firmness, or shape
  • A lump along with skin or nipple changes (dimpling, redness, discharge)
  • Family history of breast cancer and a new finding on self-exam
The procedure

How it's done

01

Clinical exam

We start with a careful exam of both breasts and the lymph node areas. Often this alone tells us a lot — whether the lump moves freely, how it feels, whether the skin is involved.

02

Imaging

Ultrasound is the first imaging in younger women and during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Mammogram is added for women over 40 or when the lump is suspicious. Sometimes we use both.

03

Biopsy if needed

If imaging shows anything that needs confirmation, we do a fine-needle or core needle biopsy in the same visit or the next one. Results take 3 to 5 working days.

Common questions

Questions worth asking

No. The majority of lumps in younger women are benign. Even in older women, most lumps that come in for evaluation turn out to be benign. The point of evaluation is to confirm, not assume.

It feels like a sharp pinch — the area is numbed first with local anaesthetic. Most patients tolerate it well.

Imaging is read on the same day. Biopsy reports take 3 to 5 working days. We call you with the result and book a follow-up if we need to discuss anything.
