What is breast lump surgery?
Sometimes a benign lump needs to be removed — because it's growing, painful, in the way, or simply on your mind. The surgery itself is straightforward; the planning is around making the scar as small and well-hidden as possible.
Common candidates for removal include large fibroadenomas, painful cysts that keep coming back, and benign tumours that have been monitored but are continuing to grow.
Who this is for
- A benign lump that's been growing on follow-up scans
- A lump that's painful, uncomfortable, or visible enough to bother you
- A lump biopsied as benign but with features that prefer removal
How it's done
Pre-op
We confirm on imaging that the lump is benign and review the recent biopsy report. The incision site is marked beforehand to give the best cosmetic result.
The operation
Done under local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic if you prefer. The lump is removed through a small, well-placed incision; the wound is closed with absorbable sutures that don't need removing.
Recovery & aftercare
Going home
Most patients are home within a few hours. Mild discomfort settles within a few days.
Looking after the wound
The wound is dressed for the first week. Stitches dissolve on their own; the scar fades significantly over 6 to 12 months.
Questions worth asking
If it's been completely removed and the pathology confirms it was benign, recurrence is rare. We do a follow-up ultrasound at 3 to 6 months to be sure.

A scarless alternative to surgery for some breast lumps and thyroid nodules. We use ultrasound to guide a single thin needle that heats and shrinks the lesion from the inside. No cut, no stitches, home the same day.

Sometimes the right answer isn't surgery. For lumps that don't need removal and pain that responds to other care, we manage things with medication, watchful follow-up, and small changes that often make a real difference.
