Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. While advances in medical science have significantly improved treatment outcomes, early detection remains the single most important factor in successful treatment. Recognizing the early warning signs can be life-saving.

One of the most common early signs is the presence of a new lump or mass in the breast. While most lumps are benign, any new lump should be evaluated by a specialist. Other signs include changes in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of the skin, nipple discharge (especially if bloody), and redness or flaking of the nipple or breast skin.

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a simple yet powerful tool that every woman should practice monthly. The best time to perform BSE is a few days after your menstrual period ends, when breasts are least likely to be swollen or tender. For post-menopausal women, choose a consistent day each month.

Clinical breast examination by a healthcare professional and mammography screening are equally important. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40 for women at average risk. Women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to start screening earlier.

If you notice any changes in your breasts, don't panic — but don't ignore them either. Schedule an appointment with a breast specialist for proper evaluation. Early-stage breast cancer, when detected promptly, has a five-year survival rate of over 99%.

Dr. Anukriti Sood emphasizes that awareness is the first step toward prevention. Regular screening, combined with self-awareness, can catch breast cancer at its most treatable stage. Don't wait for symptoms to appear — proactive screening saves lives.
