How to Check for Breast Lumps at Home
A step-by-step guide to performing breast self-examination. Monthly self-checks are a simple yet powerful tool for early detection of breast abnormalities.
Breast self-examination (BSE) is one of the easiest and most effective ways to detect breast abnormalities early. While it should not replace clinical examinations or mammograms, regular self-checks help you become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, making it easier to spot changes.
Step 1: Visual Inspection — Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look at your breasts for any changes in size, shape, or contour. Check for dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin. Look for any redness, soreness, or rash. Repeat with arms raised overhead and then with hands on hips, pressing firmly to flex your chest muscles.
Step 2: Manual Examination While Standing — Using the pads of your three middle fingers, press on every part of one breast using small circular motions. Use light pressure for tissue just beneath the skin, medium pressure for tissue in the middle of the breast, and firm pressure for tissue near the chest wall and ribs. Follow a pattern to ensure you cover the entire breast, including the armpit area.
Step 3: Manual Examination While Lying Down — Lie down with a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Use your left hand to examine the right breast using the same technique as above. This position spreads breast tissue evenly, making it easier to feel abnormalities. Repeat for the left breast.
What to look for: any new lump or hard knot, thickening or swelling, warmth or redness, dimpling or puckering, itchy or scaly sore on the nipple, nipple retraction (pulling inward), or nipple discharge.
If you find anything unusual, don't panic. Most breast changes are not cancerous. However, you should consult a breast specialist promptly for proper evaluation. Dr. Anukriti Sood recommends performing BSE once a month, ideally 3-5 days after your period starts.
