Difference Between Thyroid Nodules and Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid nodules are extremely common, but most are benign. Learn how to tell the difference and when a nodule needs further evaluation or surgery.
Thyroid nodules are remarkably common — studies show that up to 50% of people have them by age 60. The good news is that the vast majority (over 95%) of thyroid nodules are benign. However, understanding the difference between benign nodules and thyroid cancer is crucial for appropriate management.
Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths of thyroid cells that form a lump within the thyroid gland. Most nodules are discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions or routine physical examinations. Many people with thyroid nodules have no symptoms at all.
When should you be concerned? While most nodules are harmless, certain features warrant further investigation. These include: rapid growth of the nodule, a hard or fixed nodule that doesn't move when you swallow, associated hoarseness or voice changes, difficulty swallowing or breathing, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, and a family history of thyroid cancer.
Diagnosis typically involves a combination of physical examination, ultrasound imaging, and fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAC). Ultrasound can reveal features that help distinguish benign from potentially malignant nodules. FNAC, a minimally invasive procedure, provides cell samples for microscopic examination.
Thyroid cancer, when diagnosed, is generally one of the most treatable cancers. The most common types — papillary and follicular thyroid cancer — have excellent prognosis with appropriate surgical treatment. Surgery typically involves thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland) followed by radioactive iodine therapy in some cases.
